And because of them, I, who was nothing and nobody, was a prince of Denmark, a maid of Verona, a queen of Egypt.

Each phase of life is an act in the drama. William Shakespeare knew or understood a lot about many things. He knew about the lives of monarchs and the way they operate — what goes on in their private and public lives; he knew about low life in the inns and taverns of London, and he knew about the lives of rural folk.
He knew about warfare and diplomacy and he knew much more. However, he often used his own specific area of expertise — the theatre — as fodder for his poetry. He does that over and over again. This monologue is probably his most famous poetic allusion to the theatre because it is a view of the whole of life as a play.
Of course, the monologue is not actually about the theatre. Macbeth sees his life in that way — you strut about and stress on the stage but all those passions and, indeed, everything you do in life, is meaningless, as at the end of that you just disappear.
Like an actor anguishing on the stage over the trials of life, with great passion, and then, after the performance, just going home to resume his normal life. An actor playing out the human drama is only an actor.
At the end of the show he resumes a different, more permanent, life — an afterlife — and what he has done on the stage, in other words, in his life, is just an act. Real life lies beyond that. Apart from the meaning discussed here, I always thought this monologue was a discussion of the human tendency to seek drama and emotional display. Your email address will not be published. At any age and stage of life there are obstacles and opportunities, trials and triumphs. Never allow the negative bring to you to sudden halt. Make the most of the positive opportunities and stay positive.
Every stage of life is the foundation for the next stage of life. Every stage of live must be fully-lived. Now it seemed to be the young man who showed honour and obedience to the old man, to authority and dignity; now again it was apparently the old man who was required to follow, serve, worship the figure of youth, of beginning, of mirth. And as he watched this at once senseless and significant dream circle, the dreamer felt alternately identical with the old man and the boy, now revering and now revered, now leading, now obeying; and in the course of these pendulum shifts there came a moment in which he was both, was simultaneously Master and small pupil; or rather he stood above both, was the instigator, conceiver, operator, and onlooker of the cycle, this futile spinning race between age and youth.
As we age, we expand our knowledge of how the world works and how other people respond to our deeds. We also expand our language skills in order to communicate both our thoughts and feelings. Each stage presents distinct challenges that require a person to amend how they think and act. Concluding any stage of life demands that a person rebuilds oneself after living destroys our ideological beliefs.

Each incremental decade in the hayride of life incites us to address a newfangled realism. By age ten, the weepy passing of pets or grandparents, the death of sitting or past presidents, or the demise of other notable figures, obliges us to address the fact that no one including our parents and siblings will live forever.
Resignation of the soul is the final act in a one-character play. Given our genetic defect of mortality, it is impossible not to question the why and wherefore of our existence.

It is true that the world is renewed. It is also true that that renewal comes at a price, for even if the flower grows from an ancient vine, the flowers of spring are themselves new to the world, untried and untested. The flower that wilted last year is gone. Petals once fallen are fallen forever. Flowers do not return in the spring, rather they are replaced. It is in this difference between returned and replaced that the price of renewal is paid.
And as it is for spring flowers, so it is for us. Everything has a vibration that spirals inward or outward — and everything turns together in the same direction at the same time.
This vibration keeps going: it becomes born and expands or closes and destructs — only to repeat the cycle again in opposite current. Like a lotus, it opens or closes, dies and is born again. Such is also the story of the sun and moon, of me and you.
Nothing truly dies. All energy simply transforms. Death is painful and delightful. Everything that ends is also the beginning of something else. Pain is not a punishment; pleasure is not a reward.
